S.H.I.V. (Self-Harm Inflicting Vessel)

(2022)

This robot was made for the assignment ‘Creepy Creatures’, an electronics themed elective course led by Allard Roeterink and Jasper Kooper.

In collaboration with Isa de Meijer from Studiosa
She worked on the conceptual and aesthetical values, while I created the functional qualities by 3D modelling, -printing and coding the arduino boards.

The intentions were to make a moving object that arouses different emotions like making the audience uncomfortable.
Here we chose it’s movement to be the main factor to convey emotion. Therefore, we shied away from making a gory body and deliberately chose a basic form of frame, to not distract from the body language study.

The working is as follows:
Each action is based on a random time.
At first it is immobile. After an interval it lifts its arm to prepare to stab itself in the face. It cringes and braces itself to suggest it doesn’t want to. Whereafter it however still pushes through and stabs its face in a random place for a random number of times. Lastly it eases again and goes back to the immobile starting pose to helplessly wait to punish itself again.
